Porter's Sawmill: 1954-1956

The first reunion held at the
sawmill was a two-day show, being held on August 6 & 7, 1954. There
were, however, some visitors on Sunday as well as those who hadn't attended
earlier had to check out what everyone was talking about. There were
sixteen engines displayed to the delight of the large crowds and an admission
fee of 50¢ was
charged. A large tent was set up to sell food which was prepared by the
Hannegan Christian Church Ladies Aid. The following year, the
officers and directors agreed upon a set date for the show: the first full
weekend in August - Friday, Saturday, and now Sunday, too. This date is
still used at the present to hold our reunion. After the '56 show, Mr.
Porter realized he needed the farm ground the Pioneer engineers Club was using for displays and
parking, and the show was moved to the Rush County Conservation Club, its
present location. In the last few years we've come back to this rustic
farm to hold our June membership meeting.
